FATHER ALEXANDER MEN AND THE TRADITION OF OPTINA

  • Original language description

This article investigates the influence of the Hesychast tradition lived in the Optina Pustyn skete on the twentieth-century Russian Orthodox theologian and martyr Fr Alexander Men. It shows how he grew up in this. Men criticized forms of asceticism that ignored the world but found in the Optina tradition a way of combining the two that he greatly valued and sought to practice in his own ministry.
