The Roman Catholic Synod on Synodality and the Way to the Habit of Discernment
Original language description
The chapter examines one of the topics addressed by the Synod, namely discernment in matters of faith, in the light of the Nicene heritage. It critically raises the question of how the post-Nicene church resolves doctrinal conflicts. To illustrate “Nicene discernment,” the trial of Father Roger Haight following the publication of his book, Jesus Symbol of God, is presented. It is argued that the heritage of the first councils carries the potential to discern in a narrowly normative way and without an adequate hermeneutic.
