Paul in the Context of the Ephesian Tradition. The Image of the Apostle and the City through the Lens of Different Genres and Collective Memory

  • Original language description

1 Corinthians 15:32 speaks of Paul's wrestling with the beasts in Ephesus; in the New Testament canon, we have the Ephesians epistle, probably Deutero-Pauline; Acts devotes an extensive chapter 19 to Paul; and Paul is the hero of the arena scene in Ephesus in the Acts of Paul (PH 1-5). Suppose we place 1 Corinthians in the 57s of the first century. In that case, in the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistle to the Ephesians in the 80-90s of the first century, and the Acts of Paul at the end of the second century, we see in the writings of the early church a clear trace of Paul's residence in a particular place. Although the information is not historically verifiable, it plays a pivotal role in Paul's story and functions in the context of "historical metafiction." Early Christianity did not prefer historicity but rather a representation typical of the genre, which is the defining element of the personality image. This essay explores Paul's transformation in the context of place and a strong tradition regarding the apostle's claims and his message of resurrection and suffering. The concept of social memory draws on Andreas Huyssen's notion of urban space, and in the area of genre assessment, it leans on Linda Hutcheon's work.
