Convergence of Cause-Specific Mortality in Selected European Countries: Methods of Analysis and Current Trends

  • Original language description

Analysis of convergence of various demographic processes becomes one of the most discussed issues nowadays. However, different trends could be followed on the level of overall and cause-specific mortality. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to analyze convergence tendencies of mortality due to various causes of death among selected European countries in the context of the overall mortality convergence/divergence pattern. Data from Human Mortality Database (1959-2009) and WHO Mortality Database (period of the 10th revision of International Classification of Diseases only) were used for the analysis. Mortality convergence to other countries according to various causes of death was studied in the case of the Czech Republic (case study). The results confirm that the convergence/divergence pattern of mortality in Europe is not unique for all the causes of death. Knowledge of these tendencies could help us to better understand and estimate also the future mortality development in Europe.
