Systematic-taxonomic revision of the flora from the late Oligocene Fossillagerstatte Rott near Bonn (Germany). Part 1: Introduction; Bryidae, Polypodiidae, and Pinidae
Original language description
The flora of the late Oligocene Fossillagerstatte Rott, north of the volcanic Siebengebirge area near Bonn, is examined and systematically and taxonomically revised. In the introduction and geological overview we describe the geological sequences of the Rott lake deposits, followed by definitions of Rott Formation and Fossillagerstatte Rott. In the systematic-taxonomic part we treat representatives of the Bryidae, Polypodiidae and Pinidae. The revision is based on the study of the historical collections made in the 19th and 20th century and publications by WEBER (1851-1852), WESSEL & WEBER (1855) and Weyland (1937-1948). The treated part of the flora consists of 11 bryophytes, 4 ferns and conifers including several Pinaceae and 3 Cupressaceae. Names of the following bryophyte taxa have been proposed and/or accepted and in necessary cases also typified: Atrichum rottense (A.SCHLICK. 1930) VANA & IGNATOV comb. nov. (basionym: Casuarina rottensis A.SCHLICK.) (Polytrichaceae), Dicranites rottensis WEYLAND (Dicranaceae), ?Dicranaceae gen. indet., Bryum rottense (WEYLAND) VANA & IGNATOV comb. nov. (basionym: Mnium rottense WEYLAND) (Bryaceae), Rhizogonium rottense (WEYLAND) VANA & IGNATOV comb. nov. (basionym: Barbula rottensis Weyland) (Rhizogoniaceae), four Hypnales inc. sed.: Hypnites lycopodioides Ignatov & Vana nom. nov. (basionym: Hypnum lycopodioides C.O.WEBER in P.WESSEL & C.O.WEBER, nom. illegit.), Hypnites sp. 1-3, and two Bryidae inc. sed.: Muscites sp. 1-2. The ferns are represented by ? Osmunda weylandii KVACEK & WINTERSCHEID sp. nov, Pteridium xiphoides (P.WESSEL & C.O.WEBER) KVACEK & WINTERSCHEID comb. nov. including forma xiphoides and forma weberi KVACEK & WINTERSCHEID forma nov. (= Pteris crenata C.O.WEBER, nom. illegit.), Cystopteris fumariacea P.WESSEL & C.O.Weber, and Asplenium ligniticum P. Wessel & C.O.WEBER. Pteris crenata (holotype), Pteris xiphoides (lectotype), and Asplenium ligniticum P.WESSEL & C.O.WEBER (NEOTYPE) are typified here. The conifers are repesented by Pinus sp. div., Sequoia abietina (BRONGN. in CUV.) ERW.KNOBLOCH, Glyptostrobus europaeus (BRONGN.) UNGER, and Tetraclinis brachyodon (BRONGN.) MAI & H.WALTHER.
