Determinants of fertility growth in the Republic of Uzbekistan after 2017. Results of the national sample survey

  • Original language description

The question of the cause of the unexpected rise in the total fertility rate (TFR) of Uzbek women by one-third in the short period between 2017 and 2021 has sparked extensive debate in the expert community, during which no answer to the question has been found. Therefore, with the support of UNFPA, a national reproductive climate survey was organized to examine the role of cultural and social norms, economic conditions, access to family planning resources and reproductive health services, education and other factors on women's reproductive views and plans. The results of the study showed that the observed increase in TFR was supported by a combination of factors, the most significant of which appeared to be an increase in confidence in the future. The study also revealed that women from younger generations plan to have fewer children, although their views on the optimal number of children in the family do not differ significantly from previous generations. This suggests that in the relatively near future, the trend observed after 2017 may reverse and female fertility in Uzbekistan may start to decline again.
