Magnetic fabrics of rhyolite ignimbrites reveal complex emplacement dynamics of pyroclastic density currents, an example from the Altenberg-Teplice Caldera, Bohemian Massif

  • Original language description

A short talk on the emplacement and flow directions of ~314-313 Ma Teplice Rhyolite, intra-calderaignimbrites of the Altenberg-Teplice Caldera (ATC), Bohemian Massif. In this study, a method of Anisotropyof Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) was used to infer macroscopically invisible structures. Small-volume,moderately to highly welded ignimbrites prior to caldera-forming eruption showed magnetic fabricscomparable to the recent ones (i.e., Cenozoic), placing the source of the eruption on an eastern rim of thelater-formed caldera. Together with previously published radiometric data, highly welded to rheomorphicignimbrites associated with the caldera-forming eruption were probably sourced from a dike swarm upnorth from the ATC. However, their rheomorphic character obscures their magnetic fabrics, as well as dothe resurgent bodies emplaced after the caldera collapse. As such, this study also shows the practical useof AMS and its value in deciphering ancient caldera ignimbrites and interpreting their flow direction, deposition, emplacement, and post-emplacement dynamics.
