Differences in breeding parameters between two populations of Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)
Original language description
In Central Europe, Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) breeds from March to September. It canhave three to four overlapping broods, producing up to 28 young per season. The aim of ourstudy is to compare the breeding traits of two kingfisher populations occupying habitats withdifferent conditions. In the years 2014 - 2018, we monitored a total of 156 breeding pairs incentral and southern Bohemia and 99 pairs in the Danube river system in southwestern Slovakia. We found that the breeding pairs from Danubian population start breeding earlier, havemore clutches per season, overlap broods longer and raise more young per season than thebreeding pairs from Bohemian population. Interestingly, the breeding attempts of kingfishersfrom Bohemian are more successful. A total of 79% of pairs in the Bohemian population, while only 69% of pairs in the Danube population have all successful broods. Both populationshave a similar clutch sizes, the time between alternating breeding attempts, and finishbreeding at similar times. In the Danube population, there are 33% of unsuccessful breedingattempts. Kingfishers mostly lose their clutch due to landslide (37%). In the Bohemian population, there are 23% of unsuccessful breeding attempts, of which the most common causeof failure is predation (31%). Differences in breeding traits between two populations can becaused by differences in their environment.
