The Alchemical Laboratory in Visual and Written Sources
Original language description
Our book is focused on the analysis of evidence concerning alchemical laboratories to be found in pictorial and textual sources of the 15th to the 17th centuries. Using these sources, we try to identify and convey the alchemical practise of the time. In this we start from manuscript and printed lchemical treatises with a particular emphasis on their illustrations, which in the fourth part of the book we compare with visual depictions of the alchemist in the laboratory in Dutch and Flemish genre painting of the 17th century. We are equally interested in fine art as an inherent part of alchemy, and in alchemy as a specific theme of fine art. We should add that the depictions concerned have never before been compared in this kind of breadth.
