• Original language description

The chapter discusses the roles of Renaissance scholars Pietro Andrea Mattioli, Tadeáš Hájek, and Georg Handsch in the publication of Mattioli's commentaries on Dioscorides. The Latin version, published in 1554, brought Mattioli European prestige. New editions soon appeared, including Czech and German versions, with substantial revisions. Hájek, Handsch, and Mattioli each developed an interest in plants and came from different backgrounds, but for a time, they had a common interest-inter- pretation of Dioscorides, description of plants, their correct identification, and determination of their possible medical use. The chapter argues that authors of the vernacular versions of Mattioli's herbal also reflected their own interests and thus created original works.
