Spatial Distribution of PM(x) and Number Concentration of Submicron Aerosol Particles Behind Sailing Ships on the Vltava River

  • Original language description

Ship diesel engines are a significant source of number concentrations of submicron aerosol particles (PNC) and are considered an important source of mass of aerosol particles with aerodynamic diameter smaller than x microns (PM(x)) on water bodies. Ship dieseloriginating aerosol particles form a plume that trails ships while sailing. The plume dispersal, temporal and spatial distribution of aerosol particles, determines its environmental impact. The objective of the study was to measure the spatial distribution of PNC and PM(x) behind sailing ships. PNC and PM(1), PM(2.5), PM(10) were measured by a condensational particle counter and laser photometer respectively at a height of approximately one meter above water level, on board of a boat powered by an electromotor that trailed the sailing ships. These measurements were conducted on the Vltava River in Prague in spring of 2025. Seven ships with diesel engines ranging in power from 125 to 396 kW were observed. The distance between the boat and the stern of the ship ranged from 25 to 100 meters, and the perpendicular distance of the boat from the ship's longitudinal axis (the offset distance) was 10 to 20 meters. For example, PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 13 to 1170 μg m(-3), while the PNC concentration ranged from 2.460*10(3) to 2.87*10(5) cm(-3) behind the ship with diesel power of 89.5 kW, sailing at approximately 4 ms(-1). A tight regression (R(2) = 0.82) was observed between PNC and PM(2.5). The concentrations of both the variables significantly decreased at 50 m and 20 m at the shipboat and the offset distances respectively. Residence time of the ship plumes were about 35 s. As a result, our measurements demonstrate that the sailing ship leaves behind a wake aloft with a stripe of polluted air of 20-40 meters wide that resides for about 35 seconds.
