    Plane wave expansion method for modeling photonic crystal (PhC) structures is reformulated by using the correct Fourier factorization rules. The method is presented for 1D periodic multilayers and 2D PhCs with various shapes and general anisotropy. The correct factorization is also suggested for 3D PhCs.
