Lightning Activity over Central Europe Observed by the Optical Detector LIS Onboard ISS in Years 2017-2022

  • Original language description

The study analyses lightning activity over central Europe using optical data fromthe Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) onboard the International Space Station (ISS) from 2017to 2022. The ISS-LIS data are compared to data from the World Wide Lightning LocationNetwork (WWLLN). We have analysed the flash distribution in central Europe, with the highest density of flashes detected in the Alpine region. The spatial distribution of lightning flashesin Czechia shows the highest density of flashes detected in the north-western part of the country. We have also investigated the possibility of a reduction of lightning activity duringCOVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, which might be hypothetically connected to the decrease of atmospheric aerosols caused by a decreased industrial activity and decreased densityof particles of pollution. No conclusion can be made from this study, as the significant reduction in the global lightning activity was not confirmed by WWLLN data. Regional effects inCzechia are possible but difficult to separate from other causes of lightning variability.
