Simultaneous Observations of Whistler Mode Waves by the DEMETER Spacecraft and the Kannuslehto Station

  • Original language description

Conjugate observations of electromagnetic whistler mode waves in the Earth'sinner magnetosphere are used to determine their typical spatial scales and propagation tothe ground. We use data obtained by the DEMETER spacecraft at an altitude of about660 km and by the ground-based Kannuslehto station near Sodankyla, Finland. The overlapbetween the two data sets corresponds to more than 500 DEMETER half-orbits betweenNovember 2006 and March 2008. Waves at frequencies up to 16 kHz are analyzed. Thecorrelations of the power spectral densities measured by DEMETER and Kannuslehto arecalculated as a function of their geomagnetic longitude/L-shell separation and the wavefrequency. These are used to estimate typical longitudinal/L-shell correlation lengths andto discuss wave propagation to the ground.
