Entwining Temporalities in Craig Williamson's The Complete Old English Poems
Original language description
"This chapter is about the influence medieval texts impose upon modern translators as exhibited by Craig Williamson's translation of early medieval English literature: The Complete Old English Poems. A close reading and new historical approach to Williamson's translation exposes influences exerted by ideologies encoded within the source texts. Williamson acknowledges that translation practices are fundamentally collaborative processes between source texts and translators, but this study reveals the influences of source texts emerge in unexpected ways; namely, through nonconscious applications of metaphors that disrupt the logical hierarchy of influence that presumes the translator's authority over and above the source text."
