So What Had Happened Was
Original language description
"English has changed considerably over the course of its 1500-year history. In this chapter, we get an overview of what the language looked like in four major periods in this history: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Late Modern English. By comparing these periods, the chapter highlights some of the most important changes in the language—in lexicon, phonology, and morphosyntax—and sketches the socio-historical context in which they took place. There are no explanations yet: these will follow in subsequent chapters. The chapter closes with an overview of some easily available sources to investigate language change in the history of English."
