    Lightning-Induced Electron Precipitation Events Observed by DEMETER

    Lightning-induced electron precipitation (LEP) events are important phenomenain the Earth&apos;s inner magnetosphere, where atmospheric lightning strokes cause energeticelectron loss from the radiation belts. These lightning strokes induce electromagnetic wavesthat penetrate the ionosphere and propagate through the Earth&apos;s magnetosphere as so-calledlightning-induced whistlers. They interact with radiation belt electrons, decreasing theirpitch angles and causing their eventual loss into the atmosphere. At low altitudes, LEPevents in satellite data are characterized by a sudden increase in wave intensity acrossa wide range of frequencies accompanied by an increase in precipitating electron flux. Wedetect and analyze these events using wave and particle burst mode data measured by theDEMETER satellite between 2004 and 2010. We developed a semi-automatic procedureto detect LEP events, detecting more than 600 events. These events are systematicallyanalyzed, revealing the energy spectrum of the precipitating electrons.
