Foreshock Structures as a Source of Magnetosheath Jets

  • Original language description

. Plasma structures with an enhanced dynamic pressure, known as jets are oftenobserved in the Earth's magnetosheath. These structures can be found downstream ofthe quasi-parallel bow shock behind the foreshock. This region is dominated by wavesand reflected particles which interact with each other and create different transients. Many previous studies established that these foreshock structures can be a source of themagnetosheath jets. Xirogiannopoulou et al. [2024] found that the subsolar foreshockcontains several types of structures with enhanced density or/and magnetic field magnitude- plasmoids, SLAMS and mixed structures. Following these results, we use data collectedby the five cross-calibrated THEMIS spacecraft and present a multi-spacecraft case studyof the connection between the foreshock and magnetosheath structures. Careful analysis ofour example reveals that the creation of the magnetosheath jets can be independent of thepresence of compressive foreshock structures.
