A SIFT Study of Reactions of Positive and Negative Ions with Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) Molecules in Nitrogen

  • Original language description

Kinetic data are required for SIFT-MS analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkylsubstances (PFAS), which persist in the environment and the human body and maycause adverse health effects. The new generation SIFT-MS instrument Voice200 series provides additional reagent ion selection by adding negative ions OH-, O2-., O-.,NO2-, and NO3- to the set of previously used H3O+, NO+, and O2+. ions. Understandingthe reactions of these ions with PFAS vapours is thus needed. Rate coefficients andproduct ion branching ratios were obtained for pentafluoropropionic acid, heptafluorobutyric acid, nonafluoro-1-hexanol, perfluoro-2-methyl-2-pentene, perfluorohexanoicacid, perfluoro(2-methyl-3-oxahexanoic) acid, tridecafluoro-1-octanol, and nonafluorobutane-1-sulfonic acid in dry and humid air introduced to SIFT-MS while allreagent ions were repeatedly injected in a sequence. The results indicate that the positive ion reaction products are affected by humidity while most of the negative ion reaction product ions remain stable and could potentially be used for SIFT-MS analysesof PFAS in different products and indoor and outdoor environments.
