We use the fully kinetic Particle-in-Cell Monte Carlo code BIT1 to simulatethe SOL of the JET tokamak during the onset of ELM activity. We briefly describe oursimulation model, then we present the simulation results and analyze the immediate effectsof the ELM — within the first 10% of its duration. These include the temporal evolutionof plasma and impurity profiles — such as density, temperature, and potential — as well asparticle and heat fluxes to the divertors and tungsten sputtering. We find that even thoughthe injected bulk of hot plasma does not yet arrive at the divertors, the hottest electronsdo. They increase the potential drop which boosts ion acceleration and this leads to highertungsten sputtering rates.
