A Comprehensive Study of the Plasma Parameter Changes in the Magnetopause Boundary Layer
Original language description
Magnetopause plays a vital role in the magnetospheric system, regulating theflow of mass, energy, and momentum from the solar wind to the Earth. The THEMISmission, launched in 2007 to study substorms, has been observing the magnetopause fornearly two decades. This study aims to provide an understanding of the structure andprofiles of plasma parameters in the magnetopause boundary layers because various plasmaparameters exhibit structural variations inside the boundary layers. A superposed epochanalysis shows a distinct peak in the Y-component of the ion velocity in the magnetopauseboundary layer. The paper shows that this peak is not associated with the Chapman-Ferrarocurrent system or with reconnection in the magnetopause. The dawn-dusk variation showsan asymmetry in the velocity profiles inside the magnetopause boundary layer.
