Dynamics of Small 2D Coulomb Crystals
Original language description
Laser-cooled trapped ions in Coulomb crystals are used in quantumtechnology. Precise information about their vibrational modes is needed in determinationof laser frequencies in a trapped-ion quantum computer. Multidimensional crystalsdisplay some advantages for this application, but by our knowledge, there is no extensivestudy for dynamics of such a crystal in a realistic, non-ideal trapping field. We present a systematic study of vibrational modes for two-dimensional crystals with upto seven Ca 40 + ions in the potential shape of our coaxial Paul trap. The geometries aresolved by a finite-element method software, and the vibrational modes are found by fastFourier transform. As all point Paul traps have roughly similar shape of potential, theresults can be used as a guideline for different devices.
