NEW PHRYGIAN <E>ΔΙΚΕΣ, GREEK ΘΙΓΓΑΝΩ (WITH REMARKS ON MILLER’S LAW AND THE TREATMENT OF *DHS IN PIE); [Новофриг. <ε>δικες, др.-гр. θιγγάνω и некоторые наблюдения над «законом Миллера» и развитием и.-е. *Dhs]
Original language description
The paper discusses the New Phrygian aorist form <ε>δικες (or αδικες < *adedikest) and argues against its identification with PIE *deik'-, proposed by V. Orel. Since Phrygian δ requires PIE *dh and Phrygian κ appears to go back to PIE *g / *g', a comparison with Greek θιγγάνω, aor. θιγέ/ό- (along with the Delphic hapax θιγανα), MHG tîchen, and perhaps OIr. ·ding is proposed instead. The Greek verb has sometimes been compared to Ved. dih-, Lat. fingere, Toch. AB tsikā-, Gk. τεῖχος and derived from PIE *dheig'h- ‘build up, work clay, fashion’, but apart from the semantic difference, “Miller’s Law” (deaspiration after a nasal) will not account for the -γ- in the Greek root, as the paper argues. At the same time, the possibility of deriving NPhr. <ε>δικες from PIE *dhig'h-s- via deaspiration in *-Dhs- cluster is tentatively raised. © 2023 Indo-European Linguistics and Classical Philology Yearbook.
