The article is devoted to the person of Dr. Jan Konstantin Kessler, the General of Medical Services. After a brief account of his youth the article traces in greater de- tail the period of the First World War and his activities in the Czechoslovak Le- gions in Russia where he had launched his career of an army surgeon. This is fol- lowed by a brief portrayal of Kessler’s career advancement in the army in between the two World Wars, with some information on his private life. The paper then fo- cuses on Kessler’s role in the domestic anti-Nazi resistance movement, in the ac- tivities of the entire underground group and the organized intelligence network. The remaining chapters, describing his arrest, imprisonment, court proceedings and execution, are supplemented with information on his stay in the prison cells. The legacy of Jan Konstantin Kessler and his colleagues in the resistance move- ment is remembered by the memorial plaque hanging on the house where he had lived, and a commemorative plaque honoring the executed members of the leader- ship of the Union of Airmen of the Czechoslovak Republic.
