    Word classes in Occitan

  • Original language description

Occitan presents a range of main word classes similar to most other Romance varieties. This chapter focuses on a number of instances where the classification of specific items is problematic. After giving examples of the main word classes, it presents the cases of Gascon enunciatives, a specific type of preverbal particles marking the clause type of (mostly) main clauses as either declarative, interrogative, negative or exclamative; it then turns to the question of quantifiers, in particular for questions related to agreement morphology; adjectives can be subclassified into two classes in some varieties depending on their syntactic position, which is reflected in their inflectional morphology; there is also a gender-neutral 3rd person pronoun that does not fit into the usual categories. The chapter closes on reflections on our experience in implementing the GRACE and Universal Dependencies part of speech tag sets on Occitan data for computational analysis. © 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
