  • Original language description

Old Germanic binomials meaning ‘everywhere’ In the present article, it is initially asserted that the determination of whether a binomial is fixed (and therefore phraseological) or if it constitutes an ad hoc formation (and is thus non-phraseological) can pose challenges within historical corpora. These challenges are exemplified through an analysis of expressions denoting ‘forest and field’ as attested in some of the Old Germanic languages. Following this, three additional binomials conveying the meaning ‘everywhere’, as attested in the Old Germanic languages, are discussed and reconstructed for Proto-Germanic. The article illustrates that problems identified in determining the original word order of the discussed binomials can be solved by employing both the salience principle, which posits that the more significant element in a binomial linearly precedes the less important, and formal principles.
