    Applicativization in Amharic

  • Original language description

This chapter provides a detailed description of the applicative construction and of a related non-applicative construction involving the same verbal marking in Amharic (Ethiosemitic, Ethiopia). The applicative suffixes -ll- and -bb--benefactive and malefactive, respectively-always co-occur with object agreement suffixes which cross-reference the applied phrase. These two suffixes can be used with virtually any verb irrespective of transitivity or the lexical semantics of the verb root, presumably because any event can be potentially cast as benefiting or harming some entity. The same suffixes can also occur in a non-applicative construction, where the oblique phrase is marked with a preposition but cross-referenced on the verb as if it were an object.
