Original language description
The diploma thesis deals with memorials, monuments, memorial plaques, graves and other memorial sites of the Second World War in the former political district of Český Brod. It maps the history of these sites in a total of 59 towns and villages of this defunct district, with particular emphasis on the circumstances of their creation, transformation or demise. This list is supplemented by the former Antonín Švehla memorial in Ždánice, which was originally located in the Kolín district, but its history also touches on the Český Brod region. Several selected memorials demonstrate the transformation of memorial culture over the years. The work also focuses on the lives of the people whose names appear on these memorial sites and presents their often turbulent fates in 1939–1945 through shorter and longer biographical medallions. The short final passage then presents upcoming projects in some of the villages of the former České Brod district that are connected with the culture of commemoration of the Second World War. The work is accompanied by a rich pictorial appendix with more than 300 photographs, some of which are published for the first time. Another appendix is a table with a list of all the sites included in the work and data from the Ministry of Defence war graves register.
