Blogs and Body Dissatisfaction: A Corpus-Based Examination of Keyness and Collocation
Original language description
Language is central to how an individual expresses themselves, as well as how they feel about themselves. No corpus linguistics study examining language related to body dissatisfaction exists. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the language used by individuals blogging about their body dissatisfaction utilizing measures of keyness and collocation through Sketch Engine software. The results of this study show that individuals discussing body dissatisfaction frequently use terms related to social comparison (e.g., “people,” “look”), while multiword expressions (e.g., “I feel,” “I think”) highlight the cognitive and emotional aspects of body dissatisfaction. The findings in this study offer guidance for the treatment of individuals experiencing body dissatisfaction and highlight implications for future research and practice. Keywords: body image, body dissatisfaction, Reddit, keyness, collocation, corpus linguistics
