Original language description
The recording of direct experience of pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the form of travelogues has been established in the Bohemian context since the second half of the fifteenth century. Several textual testimonies that can be considered as ego-documents describe Jerusalem and other holy sites. The main question posed in this chapter is, how have these texts mediated the real experience of their authors, and to what extent have they been inspired by existing textual tradition? I use textual methods in order to reconsider the paradigm of the originality and authenticity of Czech travelogues. This comparison makes possible to better document how the “real” or idealised image of Jerusalem was delivered to the reading communities of the Late Medieval Bohemia.
