Slovenské ľudové piesne v klavírnych úpravách Vítězslava Nováka - harmonické charakteristiky a počítačové štatistiky
Original language description
This study investigates the adaptation of Slovak folk songs for piano by Vítězslav Novák, a prominent Czech composer of the first half of the twentieth century. Novák possessed a demonstrably thorough understanding of the idiom of Slovak folk song, as evidenced not only by his numerous arrangements but also by a concise study which he devoted to its theoretical interpretation and by his collecting activities mentioned in that study. The cycle of songs discussed here exemplifies refined compositional craftsmanship, sensitive treatment of the subtleties of Slovak folk music, and a professional approach to harmonic language, which was largely complex in the early twentieth century, with a prevalence of tonal progressions which Novák employed in his harmonisation. In cases where the songs have a distinctly modal character, he adapted the arrangements to modality, while the harmonisation style corresponds to the composer’s musical thinking influenced by late-Romantic and Impressionist harmony.
