Level of Readability in History and Geography Educational Resources: Primary School Coursebooks in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The research paper study seeks to consolidate facts of a level of readability in Czech educational resources intended for approximately 100,000 pupils, the 5th graders, 10-11-year-old pupils, to prove the adequate level of difficulty for a target reader. The written passages from History and Geography coursebooks were analysed employing existing readability formulas for the Czech language such as Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kinkaid Formula, Fog Index and Mistrik Formula. Subsequently, the data were contrasted with the age of pupils and years of compulsory schooling required to comprehend the genuine level of written texts; hereby to prove their appropriateness for a target examined group. The study also inquired into the data concordance within employed instruments. The results discovered dissimilarity and heterogeneity in readability issues of the analysed written extracts.
