The figure of the mother has long occupied a powerful symbolic as well as social presence in Irish society, reflecting a post‑colonial legacy of the feminised nation — by both oppressor and revolutionaries — and the centrality of motherhood and the maternal within Irish Catholicism. In recent years there has been a proliferation of images of mothers in Irish cinema. This chapter argues that such representations strike a radically different emphasis than earlier ones and challenge the long‑prevailing ideals of post‑independence national and religious myth. Identifying a category of “uncanny motherhood,” the chapter offers close readings of four contemporary films in which the maternal is haunted by forces and figures of the past. By eschewing social‑realist approaches in favor of more elliptical narrative modes — arthouse and horror — these films present complex and courageous portraits of female subjectivity, while making clear that the experience of (Irish) motherhood has often been far more complex, strenuous, and isolating than the state‑sanctioned ideal has allowed.
