<i>Fariseas lufigaþ forþmestu setulas</i> : Loanwords and Analogical Changes in the Nominal Morphology of Farman’s Gloss to the Rushworth Gospels

The present article offers a study of the nominal morphology of Farman's gloss to the Rushworth Gospels (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Auctarium D.2.19) and focuses on two inter-paradigmatic analogical changes: (1) the extension of nominative/accusative plural -as from the masculine a-stems to the neuter a-stems and other declensions and (2) the spread of genitive plural -ena from the n-stems to the a-stems. The main aim of this article is to establish the scale on which these analogical changes are attested in Rushworth1. Since loanwords tend to be integrated into productive paradigms, another aim is to study Farman's practice when borrowing Latin terms found in the gospels, more specifically the degree of morphological adaptation of the source word. The results are compared with those obtained in the study of Aldred's gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels in order to assess their degree of similarity regarding these processes.
