Original language description

The opera pasticcio Barsene, performed in 1743 on the occasion of the imperial court’s stay in Prague for the coronation of Maria Theresa as Queen of Bohemia, has hitherto remained almost unknown, mentioned only sporadically in contemporary sources. The only certain contemporary reference is a brief note in the diary of the imperial Obersthofmeister Johann Joseph Khevenhüller‑Metsch. The original score of the performance has not survived; only the libretto remains, and only three copies of it are known today. This study surveys the current state of research on Barsene, reconstructs its political and staging context in detail, and offers a dramaturgical analysis based on eighteenth-century operatic conventions. The author identifies the libretto as originally by Domenico Lalli, written for the opera Argene (music by Leonardo Leo), premiered in Naples in 1731. Based on comparative analysis of librettos, surviving musical sources, and archival databases (e.g., RISM), the study proposes a set of possible composers for the individual arias in Barsene. The likely contributors include Leonardo Leo, Giuseppe Antonio Paganelli, Ignazio Maria Conti, Paolo Scalabrini, Gennaro D’Alessandro, Leonardo Vinci and Andrea Bernasconi — with Bernasconi emerging as the most plausible candidate for the pasticcio’s overall composition. The article thus reconstructs Barsene as a historically and musically significant, though largely lost, artifact of 18th-century Bohemian court culture, while clarifying the uncertainties and presumptions involved in its reconstruction.
