The article concerns description of adjectives in a syntactic perspective, i.e. in terms of their valence properties. The author discusses two positions presented in literature on linguistics: one-way and two-way, which differ as to whether to consider the valence of adjectives in relation to nouns in the superordinate position. The author discusses the concept of describing this phenomenon based on S. Karolak’s theory of semantic-explicative syntax. According to this theory, the semantic valence of adjectives is based on a lexical concept that requires the presence of at least one semantic actant which is the carrier of the property. Therefore, each adjective is treated as valent in the sense that its use is possible provided that the noun appears in a superordinate position. Some adjectives (e.g. relational ones) imply subsequent arguments, which means that their valence has two or even three places. Following G.I. Kustova, the author considers constructionalvalence as a separate type, i.e. a type of distributional requirements of an adjective thatis conditioned by the derivational history of the phrase.
