Self-Praise in Czech Television Talk Shows
Original language description
This chapter presents an analysis of self-praise and reactions to self-praise occurring in Czech television talk shows transcribed with DIALOG, a special multimedia corpus of spoken Czech. Although talk shows serve as an example of spontaneous oral production, multiple addressees are involved, not only communicative partners but also the TV audience. The speaker is thus more careful in choosing a strategy to make a positive impression. The chapter takes into consideration the linguistic structures employed in self-praise speech acts.
