Reforms in teacher education programs to enhance the professionalization of the teaching profession

  • Original language description

Sociologists have defined characteristics that distinguish full professions from other types of occupations. The literature on the teaching profession states that teaching is classified as a semi-profession because the attributes of the teaching profession do not meet the characteristics that characterize a full-fledged profession. The status of the teaching profession can be raised by making teaching a more scientific, evidence-based and research-informed profession. This article highlights the important role of teacher education programs in realizing these improvements and raising the status of the teaching profession. Reforms in these programs can help future teachers acquire a professional knowledge base and specialized pedagogical training. All these advances contribute to increasing the professionalization of the teaching profession.
