The YMCA is essentially an organisation uniting people of Christian faith. The basis of its work was the so-called "Four-way program", which included religious (spiritual), educational and physical education activities. This organisation was establishedin London in 1844, having been formed by sales clerk George Williams. The YMCA began to spread rapidly throughout Great Britain. From here it spread to France and subsequently to Holland and Germany. It particularly flourished in the United States of America and came to Czechoslovakia from there after the First World War. Here, the YMCA began to establish military and later student residences. It played an important role in developing basketball, volleyball and other sports. It significantly contributedto the rise of permanent summer camps. It also brought a new view of the world, emerging from American Protestantism.
