Universities in Central Europe : Changing Perspectives in the Troubled Twentieth Century
Original language description
In Central Europe, dramatical changes and processes in the political sphere during the 20th century have had a specific impact on shifting perceptions about what constitutes the center and what the periphery both in the sphere of science, education and the role of universities in the societ. The author focuses on two main tendencies: 1. upward processes: transformation of the Czech University in Prague from an Austrian provincial school before 1918 to the leading nation-wide institution in Czechoslovakia and its role in founding and building of ""daughter"" institutions after 1918 and 1945; 2. regionalisation of university education and research: founding and building of new institutions in provinces (Austria before 1918, interwar, post-1945, and post-1989 Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic).
