History of Medicine and Medical Ethics in the Prague Medical Schools, from 1880 to 1989
Original language description
The history of medical schools in Prague was shaped by German models in many ways, including the adoption of introductory courses to medical studies. Medical ethics and the history of medicine have been part of medical curricula since the beginning of the 19th century until today, in different forms and with mixed results with respect to initial expectations. The history of teaching and research in medical ethics and the history of medicine, including their institutionalisation in Prague, is rich and varied. The developmennt of both disciplines has been influenced by many factors, both internal (such as progress in medical sciences, reforms of school system and curricula), and external (social, political, and ideological). This chapter studies aspects of these developments, namely the relevant disciplines, specialised institutes, the leading representatives and their crucial works against the background of changing political and ideological environments in the Czech lands between 1880 and 1989. This chapter addresses the issues related to the increasing scientification of medicine and calls for the re-humanisation of medicine and public health. It is based on an analysis of prevailing discourses as they appear in autoritative texts from the leading representatives of the history of medicine and medical ethics in Prague.
