Posing the question of a purpose in nature calls for a proper interpretation of the term 'purpose'. In this study I am attempting to generalize the concept of purpose by introducing so called ?emergent purpose?, that captures a frequent situation in nature when there is a mutual interaction between two levels of a system: the ?higher?, evolutionary level, and the ?lower? level of actual behavior of individual organisms
