Relationship between parameters of cell-mediated immunity, oxidative stress and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

  • Original language description

Oxidative stress, alterations in host immunity and inflammation may contribute to genesis and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We investigated relationships between malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of lipid peroxidation andparameters of activated macrophages, i.e. tumor necrosis factor alpha as a marker of inflammation and neopterin as a marker of cell-mediated immunity and clinical stage of HNSCC. Our results confirm the role of activated macrophages and the cellular immune system in HNSCC. In patients with activated T-lymphocytes, levels of TNF alpha inversely reflected the prognosis of disease. Although production of MDA in HNSCC patients is normal, it seems that activated T-lymphocytes contribute to lipid peroxidation.
