Acute coronary syndrome in seniors above 75 years of age
Original language description
A retrospective analysis was carried out of a sample of patients hospitalised at the Department of Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Practical Medicine in the years 2005 through 2007 for Dg R074: chest pain for the exclusion of coronary syndrome, and for Dg 120 and 121: acute coronary syndrome. Risk factors, previous medication, the method used to treat acute coronary syndrome, contraindications for surgery, and changes in medication after the episode were evaluated. Results. Acute coronary syndrome was diagnosed in 92 patients from the full sample and surgery was carried out in 41 cases (44.6 %). In 51 cases (55.4 %) a conservative approach was adopted or it was not possible to carry out coronary surgery. The most frequent reason for the selection ofa conservative approach was acute or chronic severe cognitive defects (delirium, advanced dementia), as well as severe polymorbidity or severe acute complications outside the cardiovascular system.
