Adiponectin, its cardioprotective effects and genetic variability in relation to restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

  • Original language description

Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) represents a major limitation to this procedure and despite large efforts it is still difficult to stratify patients after PCI according to restenosis risk. A wide range of proteins have been investigated in order to establish new diagnostic/prognostic markers of restenosis after PCI, without major effects. Adiponectin, a protein secreted exclusively by the adipose tissue, has recently emerged as an anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, insulin-sensitizing factor providing possible link between white adipose tissue and cardiovascular disease. This crucial role in cardioprotection is mediated via a variety of mechanisms, including inhibition of foam cell formation, expression of antithrombogenic properties and inhibition of smooth muscle cells proliferation, all vital processes in restenosis development. Considering its cardioprotective effects, the role of adiponectin in prediction of adverse cardiovascular events has been studie
