Palaeopathological Analysis of Skeletal Remains from Slavic Burial Ground in the Sady-Špitálky Locality in Uherské Hradiště
Original language description
Today, palaeopathological analysis is an integral part of any medical-anthropological research of the skeletal remains of historical populations. It contributes to the acquisition of significant data on the health of the studied population and endeavours to capture all the factors that were causally related to the incidence of diseases in the examined sample of the population. The skeletal remains from the archaeological research in Uherské Hradiště – Sady locality represent an important source of information. The Sady burial ground uncovered took in a total of 944 graves, of which 87 came from the time of Great Moravia (the ninth and early tenth centuries) and 857 have been dated to the Late Hillfort Period (the tenth to twelfth centuries AD). Parts of both osteological collections were subjected to basic anthropological analysis1 and the Late Hillfort Period group was also subjected to partial palaeopathological analysis,2 though most of the data obtained was of merely a basic informational nature and has not yet been comprehensively published. In view of the considerable historical significance of this archaeological site, archaeologists selected 27 Great Moravian and 49 Late Hillfort skeletons in previous years so that they could be revised using modern research methods. Skeletons which, according to the archaeologists, belonged to important personalities were selected for study (e.g. burials inside the sacral complex and graves with lavish grave goods). This selection also focused on determining possible family ties between the buried (e.g. individuals buried at the same time in the same grave pit or in graves placed in superposition). The presented paper includes a detailed palaeopathological analysis of selected skeletal remains in order to obtain the most accurate data on the health of the monitored sample of the Slavic population.
