Der Aufsatz vergleicht das Werk von Thomas Mann und Henrik Ibsen im Hinblick auf die sogenannte Künstlerproblematik. Der Artikel versucht ebenfalls die Entwicklung in der Einstellung beider Autoren zum Thema Kunst und zur Rolle des Künstlers zu illustrieren. Anhand von Zitaten wird außerdem Thomas Manns Beziehung zu Ibsens Werk sichtbar.
