Membrorum corporis cohaerentia : Compositional Intentions of Macrobius' Saturnalia
Original language description
This article presents the compositional intentions of Macrobius in his comprehensive educational dialogue Saturnalia. A comparative analysis based on literary sources is intended as an attempt at literary rehabilitation of the author. Macrobius' particular compositional proclamations are explained as confrontations with the main informational source, Gellius' miscellaneous collection Noctes Atticae. The keystone of the composition of the dialogue is shown to consist in a structured excerption of knowledge from different sources and their innovative integration into a comprehensive and compact unit.
