Facing the jokes. Face threat and joking in live text commentaries
Original language description
The presentation describes the operation of humour in live text commentaries. It is noted that some instances of humour, namely those conveyed through word play and conversational joking, may constitute a face threat for the recipients. This is mainly the case wtih humorous punning or innuendo, which tend to be interpreted by linguists as acts of interpersonal aggression. Yet, humour is simultaneously used with the opposite aim: to tliminate potential face threat. This is because it triggers a "play frame!, within which the interaction comes to be perceived as non-serious. It is argued that face threat and joking are closely related and constitute clear communicative strategies of the discourse participants, while forming a part of their group culture.
