First part of this text analyses the controversial idea of equality as such, then it describes some implications of this term in the fields of political and social philosophy. Next part deals with three approaches to the principle of government and social organization ? John Locke's, Jean Jacques Rousseau's and Alexis de Tocqueville's. I try to illustrate the fact that a controversy appears when the idea of equality and the idea of governance are seen interchangeable. My task was to look into this controversy.
